Can I strictly use a computer monitor as a tv for my ps3?

So my birthday is coming up and im in the market for a new tv/moniter for my ps3, i have noticed that alot of high end computer moniters have an hdmi out post, so could I just buy a moniter, hook up and hdmi from the moniter to the ps3 and use it like that? and if it has a tv tuner, can i use it as a tv too??
