Can a student rent an apartment without a job?

I am a student and the university I attend is about an hour's drive away. Last semester I was able to stay in a dorm, but we've found that the apartments in the surrounding area are actually cheaper. I have been applying for jobs and going on interviews, but I haven't been hired yet, and I really need to move out. My mom is unable to rent for me. What options are there for a student without a job?
