Vintage Stereo question: Graphic Equalizers worth buying?

I don't think these are popular anymore, but I just bought a Sansui Tuner/Integrated Amplifier combo and was thinking about buying a Sansui graphic equalizer. Do these actually work? Someone told me not to buy one because it "messes up the music"? Any comments? Thanks.
